Gravel (aggregate) roads

The Road Badger was specifically designed to rehabilitate aggregate-based roads using less fresh product and saving time and money with more efficient operations than traditional road maintenance practices.

The Road Badger’s dual scarifying system penetrates and prepares the road surface while in the same pass, the dual offset disking system retrieves, re-sizes and re-mixes existing road surfacing materials to re-establish aggregate on the travelling surface. Additionally, the Road Badger eliminates rather than covers up road defects, such as pot-holes, rocks, ruts and washboard. This is all performed with the material in situ and at an average speed of 2 to 5 km/hr. As well, the Road Badger can be set to precise depths of up to six inches to prevent cross-contamination and unwanted mixing of materials.

Current road maintenance practices usually consist of grading the gravel road – using a grader to redistribute gravel by levelling out the high spots and filling in the low spots. With this process, road defects are repaired to a maximum depth of one inch, while larger defects are simply filled with loose material, which will be flung out again when the first vehicle passes by. During this process, a lot of gravel, fines and other products end up being pushed into adjacent ditches and fields where they are wasted and can cause damage to valuable crops.

The conventional method of gravel road rehabilitation generally means scarifying the road and then windrowing existing materials so they can be re-mixed with a grader blade. This method displaces the product and requires the road grade to be re-established. It also requires several passes with different equipment for the scarifying, mixing, levelling and compacting. If dust abatement, road stabilization or surfacing products are introduced, further passes with the grader will be required to mix them in, as well. The above process usually causes traffic disruptions or detours, as vehicles must find ways to maneuver around the windrows and equipment.

Another option is complete regravelling of the road surface, which is expensive, time consuming and wasteful of non-renewable resources.

Cold mix roads (to a depth of 3”):

The Road Badger, with its finite depth control, is able to efficiently break into ONLY the travelling surface at an operational speed of 2 to 5 km/hr. In the same pass, the material is broken up and re-mixed without damaging or fracturing the aggregate. Additionally, the Road Badger is very efficient at mixing in new materials, such as dust control products or road stabilizer.

Conventional methods would consist of either grinding the surface with a reclaimer, or ripping up the road with a grader and then making multiple passes with breaking disks or blades to break up the pieces. Average daily production is usually no more than 1/2 to 1 kilometer per day, with a majority of that time spent on breaking up the material for reworking. This is certainly not the most cost effective way to rehabilitate a cold mix road.

Oiled roads:

The Road Badger has a huge advantage over conventional methods when it comes to rehabilitating oiled roads. Since the Road Badger is able to reuse existing road materials without fracturing or damaging them, it significantly reduces the amount of new materials required. In some cases, the Road Badger actually eliminated the need for additional materials!

This saves money, time and non-renewable resources and reduces the need to haul in truckloads of new materials. Fewer hauling trips means reduced emissions and a further saving of man hours, money and wear & tear on equipment.

Additionally, the Road Badger works at speeds of up to 5 km/hour and can break up and mix the road surface in a single pass – speeding up completion time and minimizing traffic disruptions.
